95%

A landmark test program by the British Safety Industry Federation found that 95% of safety gloves from non-registered suppliers failed to meet the standards printed on their labels. The market is flooded - and workers are paying the price.

The Scale of the Problem

UK law is unambiguous: every employer must ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is provided to any employee exposed to a health or safety risk. The word suitable is doing a lot of heavy lifting there - because suitability requires that the equipment actually works.

Yet a sweeping assessment by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) exposed a market in crisis. Across all PPE categories tested from non-registered suppliers, nine in ten products failed to meet the standards they claimed. Seven further test results remained pending at time of publication.

The Glove Problem Is the Worst of All

While the headline failure rate across all PPE categories was a shocking 90%, safety gloves emerged as the single most problematic product type - with a 95% failure rate among non-registered providers. These are gloves being sold, often at attractive price points, with cut, abrasion, and puncture resistance ratings they cannot substantiate.

A glove that claims EN388 cut protection but fails independent testing isn't just a poor value purchase - it's a legal liability and a direct threat to the hands of the people wearing it.

The misconception that any product labelled "safety glove" delivers meaningful protection is both understandable and dangerous. Attractive packaging, convincing markings, and low prices make these products easy to overlook during procurement. Many are still openly available for purchase online right now.

How to Tell the Difference

The most reliable single check when sourcing PPE is to confirm that your supplier holds BSIF Registered Safety Supplier status. BSIF members commit to rigorous self-declaration and auditing, and the data shows the difference this makes: 86% of products from registered suppliers passed independent testing, compared to just 5% from non-registered sources.

What BSIF Registration Means in Practice

BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers commit to only supplying PPE that meets the declared standard. Their products carry the correct markings and are backed by genuine type-examination certificates. It doesn't guarantee perfection - but it shifts the odds dramatically in your favour.

Always look for both UKCA and CE markings on gloves, and verify that a Declaration of Conformity is available from the manufacturer.

What This Means for Procurement

If your organisation purchases safety gloves - whether for construction, manufacturing, logistics, maintenance, or any other application - this data is a direct call to review your supply chain. The questions to ask are simple:

Is your current glove supplier BSIF registered? Can they provide a valid Declaration of Conformity? Have the specific models you're using been independently tested for the hazards your workers actually face?

Getting this right isn't bureaucracy - it's the foundation of a functional PPE program. The right glove for the right job is never the cheapest glove on the shelf.
