
A product can tick every box and still turn out to be the wrong choice.
That's particularly true with hi-vis, gloves and safety boots. A specification can tell you what a product is designed to do. A fitting can tell you whether it feels right for a few minutes. Neither tells you much about what happens several hours into a shift, in bad weather, during hard work, or how it fits with the rest of the kit someone is already wearing.
That's where a proper trial earns its place.
The value isn't simply in giving people a chance to try something before you buy it. It's in finding out whether the product works in the conditions it is actually going to be used in, and just as importantly, whether there is anything about it that could make people less likely to wear it properly.
A useful trial should tell you something you didn't already know.
Test what you can't learn from the spec sheet
The point of a trial isn't to repeat the information you already have.
If you're looking at safety boots, you can establish their protection, construction, certification and other technical requirements before anyone puts them on. The same applies to hi-vis and other workwear.
The more useful questions are the ones that only become apparent in use.
How do the boots feel after several hours on hard surfaces? Does the fit still work when someone is climbing, driving or walking long distances? Do they cope with the conditions they're actually going to be used in?
For hi-vis, it might be how the garment behaves when someone is moving between indoors and outdoors, working in different temperatures, driving, bending, climbing or wearing several other layers of PPE.
And then there are the less obvious questions.
Does anything rub or restrict movement? Does the garment get too warm? Is it awkward to adjust? Does it work comfortably with other PPE? Does a particular fit or size cause problems? Are there situations where people instinctively loosen, remove or work around it?
Those details are difficult to establish from a product sheet. That's precisely why they're worth testing.
The real test starts when the novelty wears off
A five-minute fitting has its place, but it can only tell you so much.
Something can feel perfectly comfortable when someone first puts it on and become a very different proposition several hours later. That's particularly relevant with safety boots, where the difference between a comfortable fitting and an uncomfortable full shift can be significant.
The same applies to workwear.
A jacket might feel fine standing still but become restrictive when someone is driving or working at height. A garment that feels comfortable indoors might become too warm when someone moves outside. Gloves that feel good initially might become frustrating when a job requires repeated handling or fine movement.
The longer a trial runs, the more likely you are to see those issues.
Ideally, people should be using the kit during their normal work rather than simply wearing it long enough to form a first impression. Different weather, surfaces, tasks and working patterns can all reveal things that aren't obvious at first.
The useful feedback often starts once the novelty has worn off.
Worker feedback is more useful when there's something behind it
There's nothing wrong with asking people whether they like a product. It's just not enough on its own.
A simple rating can make comparisons easier. Comfort, fit, freedom of movement, practicality, compatibility with other PPE and overall acceptance are all useful areas to score.
But the score becomes much more useful when you understand what's behind it.
Someone giving a boot 3/5 for comfort might simply prefer a different style. Or they might have developed discomfort after six hours on their feet. Those are very different findings.
Likewise, someone might rate a jacket highly overall while mentioning that it becomes uncomfortably warm when they're working hard. That detail could matter considerably if the same conditions apply across a large part of the workforce.
So, alongside any scoring, it's worth asking questions such as:
- What worked particularly well?
- What became less comfortable or practical during the shift?
- Was there anything that restricted movement?
- Did anything make the PPE harder to use alongside other kit?
- Did any problem appear only after prolonged use?
- What, if anything, would make you less likely to wear it?
That last question is particularly valuable.
Because the most important feedback isn't always about what people like. It's about what could stop them using the product properly.
Pay attention to the reasons behind non-compliance
Worker acceptance can sometimes get treated as a softer consideration alongside the technical requirements.
It shouldn't be.
PPE that provides the required protection but is routinely removed, loosened, worn incorrectly or avoided because it's uncomfortable isn't delivering that protection in practice.
That doesn't mean comfort or preference should override a safety requirement. They shouldn't.
It means usability is part of the bigger picture.
If people consistently report that a jacket is too hot, that boots become uncomfortable after several hours, or that a particular fit gets in the way of the job, those aren't simply matters of personal preference. They could affect whether the PPE is worn as intended.
That's why comments about what might make someone less likely to wear something can be more revealing than a simple “would you wear this?” question.
Don't be afraid of negative feedback
A trial shouldn't be there to prove that your shortlist was right.
If several people identify the same problem, that's useful information, even if it is inconvenient (in the short term).
A boot that becomes uncomfortable after a few hours. A jacket that people keep taking off because it runs too hot. A size on a label that somehow doesn't fit. Gloves that make a regular job noticeably harder.
Those are exactly the sorts of things you'd rather discover during a trial than after you've placed a large order.
Negative feedback isn't evidence that the trial has failed, it's evidence that it's doing its job. The important thing is to understand whether an issue is isolated or whether it points to something more significant.
Look for patterns, not just opinions
Not every piece of feedback carries the same weight.
One person saying they don't like the look of something is a preference. Several people independently reporting the same problem with comfort, fit or movement is something else entirely.
This is where having a reasonably consistent way of recording feedback becomes useful.

The scores aren't the whole story. They're a way of making the feedback easier to compare.
The written comments are where the context comes from.
It's also worth looking at the differences between roles.
A boot that works well for someone who spends most of their time indoors might not be the right choice for someone walking several miles outside every day. A jacket that works well for a relatively static outdoor role might not suit someone who spends most of their shift driving or doing physical work.
Likewise, someone who has experienced problems with PPE before may notice issues that aren't immediately obvious to someone else.
That's useful insight, not awkward feedback.
If you're comparing products, keep the comparison fair
Where more than one product is being trialled, consistency matters.
The same criteria should be applied to each option, and ideally the products should be experienced in broadly comparable conditions.
There's little value in one product being trialled during a relatively easy week and another being put through the worst conditions of the month.

Again, the scores aren't there to turn the decision into a mathematical exercise.
They're there to make the conversation more useful.
Instead of saying:
“Everyone seemed to prefer Product B.”
You can say:
“Product B scored higher for comfort and fit, and several testers said they were more comfortable wearing it for a full shift.”
That's a much stronger basis for a purchasing decision.
It gives buyers something they can explain and defend, while also giving H&S teams a clearer picture of what happened outside the technical specification.
The trial can tell you more than whether people like the product
There's another benefit to running a trial properly: it can expose issues beyond the immediate wearing experience.
For workwear, it can be useful to consider what happens after repeated washing and use. Does it retain its fit? Does it remain practical to clean and store? Are replacement sizes readily available? Does the range work across different seasons?
For boots, repeated wear may reveal issues that aren't apparent initially. Comfort can change, materials can wear, and problems that weren't noticeable on day one can become obvious after several weeks.
And then there's the practical question of supply.
A product that works brilliantly but becomes difficult to source, replace or size consistently can create problems further down the line.
The trial doesn't have to answer all of those questions on its own. But it can highlight which ones are worth asking before the purchase is finalised.
What a good trial should leave you with
By the end of a useful trial, you should have more than a collection of opinions.
You should have a clearer view of:
- Where each product performs well.
- Which issues only become apparent during real use.
- Whether those issues are isolated or consistent across different roles.
- How the product works alongside other PPE.
- Whether people are likely to wear it comfortably and correctly.
- Whether the sizing and fit work across the workforce.
- What questions still need answering before the purchase.
- Why the eventual choice makes sense.
That last point matters.
A good trial creates a record of why a decision was made, rather than relying on someone's memory of a few conversations or a general feeling that one option was better.
The decision still starts with safety
Real-world feedback is important, but it doesn't replace the fundamentals.
The first question is whether the product meets the relevant safety requirements. That's non-negotiable.
From there, the practical questions become increasingly important:
Does it work for the job?
Does it perform in the conditions, environments and tasks where it will actually be used?
Will people wear it properly?
Do comfort, fit, movement and usability support consistent use rather than work against it?
Can you keep supplying it?
Can you cover the required sizes, replace worn or damaged items, and continue sourcing the product when you need it?
The cheapest option isn't necessarily the best value. Nor is the product that gets the highest score in one category.
The better choice is usually the one that meets the safety requirement, works in the real conditions and is practical enough that people will actually wear it.
A trial should challenge the decision, not just confirm it
The best workwear trials aren't really about finding out whether people like a product.
They're about reducing uncertainty.
They give buyers evidence where a specification can only give you information. They give H&S teams the opportunity to identify problems before they become workplace issues. And they give the people wearing the kit every day a chance to flag things that might otherwise only become apparent once a full order has arrived.
Most importantly, a good trial should be capable of changing your mind.
If the evidence points somewhere different from where you expected, that's not a problem with the trial.
That's the value of having run it.
